Domestic vacations take off as consumers seek adventure & culture.
Compared to last year, the share of consumers who took a domestic vacation this summer rose by 19-percentage points to 70%. Destinations that promote adventure and culture, such as amusement parks, cities and sightseeing tours, enjoyed increased visitation.
Many travelers say their experience has been better than usual.
Despite “travel nightmare” headlines, over 2 in 5 travelers say their experience this year has been better than usual. A sense that COVID-19 is less of a threat and of freedom as destinations loosened restrictions were the driving forces behind better experiences. Still, other travelers report that high costs, overcrowded destinations and flight delays or cancellations had a negative impact on their vacations.
As inflation drives travel costs sky high, some are undeterred and splurge on luxury trips.
Over half of travelers say they spent more money than last year. For most, total money spent on travel in the past 3 months fell within $1,000 and $5,000. However, almost 10% of travelers report spending over $10,000. And 27% classified their trip’s ‘price tag’ as luxury. Luxury travel appears most popular among Black travelers.
